I am interested in the rhetoric of photography and how it has the power to conflate and dichotomize object/subject. Working in repetition allows me to meditate on my process and understand racial identity and how the landscape of race is malleable and can be negotiated.

I was told not to look back at the past because it distracts from the now. Referencing certain parts of history allows me to shift my lens from cultural to universal, back and forth. Through my exploration of identity with racialized objects and strategies. I find that my challenge is not in identifying "racist imagery", but rather negotiating what race is.

Davion Alston (b.1992) received his BFA in studio art with a focus in Photography as well as a Minor in Anthropology from Georgia State University. His work debates the idea of conflation between object and subject with deft investigations of race, gender, sexuality, class, and performance.
