Artist Statement.

My earlier work posed questions that dealt with the camera as a tool of activation, and the body as object; resulting in multiple themes based on the consequences of photography and the history it is attached to.

Since then, my interdisciplinary photographic practice has shifted into a multidisciplinary practice of sculpture and painting, because of the answer’s photography could not give me. I no longer desired to negotiate identity, particularly my own. So, I started to dig deeper to understand how this shift of approach, can reflect telescopically onto the shifting identity of Atlanta, the displacement of neighboring communities, and being resilient through immobility. Within my painting and sculptural endeavors, I rely on a universal language behind basic shapes such as the circle, square, triangle, and trapezoid to make sense of our city’s architectural history.

I then use these shapes with abundant layers of black paint, sumi ink, and water to investigate the fluidity of blackness. This form of investigation also helps me understand my relationship to the racial landscape built around us.

Alston (b.1992) received his BFA in studio art with a focus in Photography as well as a Minor in Anthropology from Georgia State University. His work debates the idea of conflation between object and subject with deft investigations of race, gender, sexuality, class, and performance.
